Australian politics can be toxic. Not always — but too often. The CIPA Civility Pledge is a first step toward changing that: a commitment from politicians to a small set of simple, important principles for how they conduct themselves in political life.
We're asking every elected politician in Australia — local, state and federal — to sign it.
But this isn't just about politicians. If we're bold enough to ask them to change, we have to be willing to change too. That means removing the nastiness, the threats, the swearing from how we engage with them — face to face, on social media, or anywhere else.
We know this is a big ask. Political passion runs deep, and it should. All we're asking for is a bit more compassion — because it will lead to better decisions, and better outcomes for everyone.
The Pledge isn't the answer on its own. But it's a start.
